Airsoft and Cigarette Smoking - Hobby and Habit : A Deadly Combination
SMOKING and airsoft are a deadly combination that dramatically increase the risk of a blood vessel bursting inside the brain. This is with particular attention to long time smokers and who are also into the airsoft hobby.
High blood pressure induced during strenous physically activity like airsoft wargames and smoking are known to increase the risk of heart diseases. However, medical researchers have shown that the two have a stronger, "synergistic effect" when both are present in the gamefield.
A recent survey by medical professionals found that airsofters who smoke tend to have high blood pressure during and after wargames. Airsofters who smoke are significantly more likely to suffer from a hemorrhagic stroke - a type of "bleeding" stroke where a blood vessel bursts and bleeds in the brain - than non-smokers with blood pressure problems.
Cases from FilAirsoft (FAS) and other airsoft groups have shown that those who suffered fatal heart attacks before, after or during airsoft games were generally smokers. The morbidity factors revealed should encourage smoking airsofters to quit and deal with their blood pressure as well. Worse, some airsofters who smoke are not aware that they are in the high risk group.
Considering that these risk factors have a synergistic effect, playing airsoft, quitting smoking and lowering blood pressure will contribute more to preventing fatal stroke and myocardial infarction (heart failure) than if this previously unreported interaction is ignored. Cigarette smoking and the airsoft hobby simply do not mix and will never do.
A hemorrhagic stroke is especially debilitating as about half of sufferers die as a result of it, while many survivors are left with paralysis or other crippling effects. It was the only type of cardiovascular problem where the UP researchers found this heightened risk.
Airsoft wargames are physically strenous activities which demand that one must be fit to enjoy the benefits of the hobby. Non-hypertensive airsofters tend to have a slightly elevated blood pressure during wargames. This is brought about by the adrenaline rush and physical activity that normally happens to an airsofter. However, smoking adds strain on the airsofter’s cardio-vascular system. It is generally observed smoking may damage blood vessels in the brain that are already weakened by high blood pressure.
Smoking appear to exacerbate the impact of blood pressure on the risk of coronary heart disease or ischemic stroke, which was caused by a blood clot. Weakened blood vessels are prone to rupture and bleeding and are therefore particularly susceptible to hemorrhagic stroke. All the more reason why an airsofter must not smoke.
About 40 per cent of all airsoft deaths here in the Philippines are caused be heart, stroke and vascular diseases, which is more than any other disease group.
The prevalence of these conditions is increasing as more people are into airsoft.
