It's about time ASCUK had its own M14 disassembly guide, and I've owned my own replica long enough, and know my way around the gearbox well enough to compile one. Without further ado, here's how to takedown the Marui M14 Receiver, and disassemble the gearbox in preparation for upgrades:
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/01.jpg
Preparation
Find a plat, clean surface with plenty of room, and have all your tools ready to hand. You will need screwdrivers and allen keys of varying sizes, so do not progress further until you have the right tools for the job. Also keep containers where you can hold delicate/small parts safely, such as cups and glasses.
As you can see from the photo below, I have drawn a "Rawlings Plan" for the M14 gearbox. To find out what this is and its use, please read THIS thread, it'll explain everything. For me, it's a crucial piece of equipment not only disassemble and reassemble the M14 in good time, but also keep your bits and bobs in the right place and prevent them from being lost. If you've not done this already for your M14, have a sheet of cardboard and a marker pen ready so that you can draw and punch holes as you go along.
Finally, make yourself a cup of tea (or if you're Del, a glass of fizzy pop) stick on some music like the soundtracks to Henry V or Brazil, and get started.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/02.jpg
Step 1
A: remove the trigger guard assembly (circled) from the lower receiver by pulling the guard outwards on its hinge. (How to do this in particular is described in the gun's manual.) It should then fall out of the gun.
B: Gently pull the main gun assembly forwards and then upwards from the body. The battery wire needs to be disconnected from the motor wires (circled). Afterwards, your M14 should look like this, separated primarily into two halves.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/03.jpg
Step 2
A: Remove the screws from the lower receiver, there are six in total. Place them into your Rawlings plan.
B: Remove the bolt lever bracket and place it to one side.
C: Turn the hop unit OFF.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/04.jpg
Step 3
A: Unscrew the bolt lever guide from the bolt lever itself.
B: Pull the bolt lever spring guide back and away from where it is clamped to the front of the hop unit. Gently pull it away to either side, which will allow you to pull the guide and spring away from the gun. Add to your bits pile.
C: Pull the bolt lever back and out of the gun assembly, then remove the unscrewed bolt lever guide.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/05.jpg
Step 4
A: Remove the bolt cover knub and ring (circled) and place in safety.
B: Remove bolt cover by pulling it upwards and out of the receiver (a bit of jiggling may be needed).
C: If you have one of these, remove the RIS/heat shield screw bracket.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/06.jpg
Step 5
A: Remove the four screws from the lower barrel clamp and place them into the corresponding holes of your Rawlings plan. Take care, it's spring-loaded.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/07.jpg
Step 6
A: Remove bolt stop pin and bolt stop cover. The pin can be pushed out by a narrow head screwdriver. This then reveals the bolt stop screw which helps hold the upper and lower receivers together.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/08.jpg
Step 7
A: Remove the bolt stop screw and prise-open the two receiver halves with care, making sure that the inner barrel assembly and hop unit is supported.
B: The inner barrel unit can then be removed.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/09.jpg
Step 8
A: Remove the lower receiver pin ("LRP") by knocking it out with a narrow headed screwdriver and pin hammer.
B: Remove the lower receiver/magwell from the gearbox.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/10.jpg
Step 9
A: Carefully remove the trigger spring. This can be prised-out with a small flat head screwdriver.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/11.jpg
Step 10
A: Remove the motor wire connectors (circled) and loosen the wires from their grooves.
B: Remove the two motor torx screws and their washers.
C: Carefully remove the motor from the gearbox.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/12.jpg
Step 11
A: Remove the selector bar screw (pointed to).
B: Remove the grub screw which holds the selector switch onto its axis. (You'll need a 1/16" allen key.) Remove the switch.
C: Remove the two selector bracket screws, along with the bracket itself.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/13.jpg
Step 12
A: Remove the plastic selector bar and the selector switch axis (held in hand).
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/14.jpg
Step 13
A: Remove the connector plate screws and the plates themselves.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/15.jpg
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/16.jpg
Step 14
A: Remove the two screws affixing the connector plate bracket to the gearbox.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/17.jpg
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/18.jpg
Step 15
A: Remove the safety switch screw, and the switch itself from the gearbox shell.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/19.jpg
Step 16
A: Turn the gearbox over.
B: Remove the four trigger plate screws and place them into the corresponding holes, as two are shorter than the other.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/20.jpg
Step 17
A: Remove the two springs from behind the trigger plate.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/21.jpg
Step 18
A: Remove the trigger plate, wire and switch assembly, and the second plastic selector switch bar from the gearbox.
B: Not the positioning of the two aluminium levers, and that the larger sits over the smaller, the latter of which slots into the trigger.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/22.jpg
Step 19
A: Remove the trigger, large lever, and small lever in that order. Note the way the large lever hooks into the gearbox shell itself, and into which axis holes they all slot.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/23.jpg
Step 20
A: Remove the two torx screws and their washers from the gearbox shell.
B: Remove the one phillips head screw from the gearbox shell.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/24.jpg
Step 21
A: Slip-off the gearbox shell clip by prising it off with a flat head screwdriver.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/25.jpg
Step 22
A: Prepare to open the two halves of the shell by placing a screwdriver into the spring guide hole and gently levering it up. The two halves should start to separate.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/26.jpg
Step 23
A: Increase the gap by inserting the screwdriver between the gap itself and levering upwards.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/27.jpg
Step 24
A: When You start to feel the thing come open, make sure that the spring guide doesn't come flying out the back. Hold it in place with a screwdriver as I have done below.
B: Use another screwdriver to continue to prise the two gearbox halves apart.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/28.jpg
Step 25
A: Opening the gearbox fully can be messy if you're not careful. You'll need to hold down both the spring guide and the (brass) cylinder (done with index finger) to prevent the spring, guide, piston, and a couple of other internals from going flying.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/29.jpg
Step 26
A: One opened Marui Version 7 Gearbox. (Note how I'm still holding down the cylinder.)
B: To remove the spring guide and spring, hold the guide down, push it forwards, and then lift it up, carefully allowing the spring to decompress itself.
C: Your upgrades are now ready to perform.
i24.photobucket.com/albums/c29/Morden279/M14%20Guide/30.jpg
To reassemble the gearbox, simply follow the guide in reverse. Until then, allow yourself a breather and celebrate the fact that you've just taken apart probably the most intricate AEG gearbox on the market. So we all holy rites - let there be sung Non Nobis and Te Deum.
